Handpicked Available Domains (Part 1 of 2)…

April 9, 2014

Like many I’ve been watching the many new TLDs (mostly bad, some good) go live each day.   Sure there are good opportunities out there – although tiered advance registration is pricing many domainers out of the game.   So I thought it might be time to start posting some handpicked available .com names again…

Here’s what I look for when selecting names…

  • Exact match keyword domains – ones in the right order without any extraneous words tacked on
  • Existing search demand – both exact match and extract match phrase
  • High Cost Per Click (CPC) – Indicates what advertisers are paying in this niche and is the best possible indicator of potential monetization
  • Available for immediate hand registration – no auctions, Sedo listings, pending deletes, redemption names, etc.

Here are today’s names, all are currently available to and can be registered at your favorite registrar…

450+ Exact match product and service domains with live traffic

April 13, 2013

Update: If you’d like to receive future available domains and private domain sales, here’s the link.

I’m offering domains for sale from a portfolio of 450+ exact match product and service domains, most with active traffic – many with existing revenue.

The majority of the names have been parked with Smartname.com and have received over 67,129 unique visitors over the last year. With a little work, many can be developed or sold to end users in the $xxx – $x,xxx range.

Each domain includes one year renewal.   To purchase, be the first to e-mail ‘SOLD’ and the domains you agree to purchase.  Payment to be made within 24 hours via Paypal. If we haven’t done business before, payments over $500 to be made via wire transfer.

Domain pricing: $95/each

Volume discounts of $69/domain apply if purchasing 10 or more domains and $49/domain if purchasing more than 100 domains.

All domains are provided as is, however I am providing my last year’s worth of traffic data (unique visitors) provided by Name.com and the attached report with shows keyword demand, CPC and alternate extensions registered.

Names are expected to sell very quickly so if interested, contact me as soon as possible as this message is going out to several hundred domain investors on my newsletter.

Estimating type in traffic for a domain

July 23, 2009

In this post, I’ll outline a simple formula you can use to evaluate the type-in traffic potential of a generic keyword .com domain.   I thought this might be a useful exercise after reading DomainNameNews.com recent editorial on .CM Typo Traffic and plan to write a follow up post applying this formula to alternate domains like .cm.

Where do type-in visitors come from?

Generic .com keyword domains get type-in traffic from several different sources, namely visitors who…

  • type in domains (e.g. cars.com) expecting to find a certain type of site
  • use the URL box as a search box (since certain browsers append .com to keywords)

Determining keyword demand by Google monthly searches (MS)

The first thing I look at is the demand for the keyword.  I use Google’s keyword tool to determine ‘exact match’ monthly searches (MS).   Important: When using this tool,  change the match type from ‘broad’ to ‘exact’ or you will receive inflated numbers.

Direct Navigation Percentage (DNP) – estimating how  many people use direct navigation (type-ins) vs. search

Next we’ll need to determine the percentage of users who use direct navigation (DNP) instead of search.   For today’s example, I am going to use a ‘guessed’ percentage of 2%.   If you have a large amount of parked domains in a niche you can determine your industry percentage by dividing your total unique monthly visitors by the total number of Google’s estimated searches for your keywords.

The basic formula

formula1b
Example:
If Keyword Phrase, gets 5,000 Google searches per month and we estimate that 2% of users use direct navigation in this niche, the type-in traffic estimate for KeywordPhrase.com  is 100 visitors per month (5,000 x 2%).

Conclusion

Hope this post helps provide a starting point for evaluating keyword domains from a type-in perspective.  Future posts will concentrate on other contributing factors to domain value including development potential, SEO advantages and end user resale value.

That’s not helpful because no one knows what the DNP is. It would vary by industry, country, etc.

Tony 07.23.09 at 1:03 pm

I think this is an oversimplification but nice effort.

I think the biggest factor is not the industry but the number of words or even letters in a domain. One worders tend to get 5-10x the traffic of 2-worders which in turn tend to get 5-10 more traffic than 3-worders with everything else being equal. At least this has been my experience.

admin 07.23.09 at 2:55 pm

Thanks for the comments. Hope it wasn’t too much of an oversimplification – was trying to lay out a very basic framework for beginners who don’t really know where to start when evaluating any type-in potential for a name.

Couldn’t agree more that number of words is a very good indicator of type-in potential. I didn’t include it in this post because it is already somewhat factored in the the Google monthly search demand. For example, ‘candy’ receives 550,000 estimated monthly searches, but ‘candy bars’ only receives 22,200 searches. I’ll probably write a standalone post about word length, hyphens, stop words and numbers if I turn this post into a series as planned.

As far as DNP goes, a more accurate guess can be gotten by comparing the number of estimated searches to the actual clicks received. For example…

The term ‘blog hosting’ receives 4,400 searches per month on Google. If I own BlogHosting.com and it receives 10 type-in visitors a day, it’s Direct Navigation Percentage (DNP)=

(10 * 30 days) / 4,400 = 6.8%

If I owned 100 hosting domains, I could average together their DNPs for a more accurate estimate which might give me a slight edge when evaluating type-in potential of other hosting domains.

Anunt 07.23.09 at 4:07 pm

Use statbrain.com and alexa.com and use common sense!

Bob 07.23.09 at 8:15 pm

Good foundation for a series! I hope that you do follow up with this. It took me a long time to figure this some of this stuff out, and it’s great to see somebody else that’s willing to share what they’ve learned on this relatively mysterious topic……

Vikz 07.24.09 at 2:02 am

Exactly the sort of simplified explanation beginners like me are looking for. Thanks!

lisa 10.19.09 at 5:13 am

Hi! A great Traffic Estimator tool is http://www.estimix.com. It seems to generate very accurate information.

admin 10.20.09 at 9:31 am

Thanks for the Estimix link lisa. I ran a number of test searches with it. The numbers look high, but a very interesting tool nonetheless. Just added it to the ‘traffic tools’ section of my domaining mindmap.

Wanted to pass along a 80% discount for possible new Google keyword tool replacement software

November 11, 2013

I’ve been checking out a lot of tools since the demise of Google’s Keyword Tool.    Some good, some bad.  I just learned about a new software based tool being released this week called Keyword Demon.  Since I’m a member of JVZOO, I received a pre-launch notice that it’s being offering with a 80% Early Bird Discount via this page.

Looking at the sales page, it looks like the product is going to sell for $77, but is available until 11PM tonight for $17.   One warning, the sales page is in typical IM format – lots of hype, and I wouldn’t be surprised to see multiple upsells on the back end (a la GoDaddy), but the screen shots of the tool look impressive…

Safari

This PC based software is being marketing as a professional keyword generation tool and uses most of the important metrics (CPC, exact match searches, competition, commercial value).  It also looks to have some boolean keyword filtering options (e.g. keywords containing word ‘business’ but excluding ‘card’) as well.

From the sales page, it’s not clear what the source of the keywords is (Google, Bing, Amazon, 3rd party API, etc.) There are also a number of typos on the product page and the price looks very low for this type of product.    This is most likely due to the software creators being non-US based and trying to build up a new following – pretty typical for most products listed on JVZOO.  I did notice that the product is currently today’s best selling product on JVZOO’s market place, with over 250 copies sold today.

This is probably the first time I’ve  posted about a product I didn’t try out myself (it’s PC based and I’ve been Mac only for the past few years and hate running slow PC programs in emulation mode.  If you do try it out, I’d love to hear if it is worth firing up one of my old PCs for!

Disclosure Statement:   As always, when available I do include affiliate links in my posts.

Micropost: 3 available minisite domains available for hand registration

May 15, 2009

Wanted to post the following three exact match .com keyword domains suitable for minisite development, affiliate or SEO use. All are currently available for registration as of 11:30AM EST.

I’ve checked demand and CPC for each domain using Google’s external keyword tool. Since each domain is an exact match keyword domain whose keywords have Adwords advertisers, they can be easily monetized with Adsense/affiliate programs or possibly resold to an end user.

If you’ve been interested in trying out a minisite service like Devhub or Whypark, these might be good candidates….

1. SwivelTVMounts.com

$8.79 CPC with 320 exact match Google searches last month.  Here’s an example of the types of products you could feature in a minisite.   Would also be a good domain for these types of end users.

2. HospitalBedTable.com

Exact match product name has $1.59 CPC with 720 exact match Google searches last month.   Singular version receives about twice as many searches as plural and is well suited for a mini site.   Here are some product examples.

3. WoodPokerTables.com

$2.13 Cost per click (CPC) with 590 exact match Google searches last month.   Plural version can be used for a minisite or end user sale.  Here are some product examples.

That’s it for today. If you are interested in receiving future available minisite domains…

  • Subscribe here to receive advance e-mail notification of available names.
  • Follow me at @DomainTweeter.
  • Since many names I post receive simultaneous registrations, you may want to use a fast registrar and have your billing information pre-programmed. Or use a program like Roboform to fill in your information.

Update: I’m going to try mixing it up a little for the next week or two. Some days I may not post a domain, other days I’ll try to highlight a few different names and do a more detailed writeup of possible minisite concepts or end user sales possibilities.

I’m also going to start emailing some names exclusively to my mailing list subscribers and tweeting others just for my Twitter followers.

Why most domainers don’t get Twitter at first…

March 12, 2009

confused

Twitter has an image problem, whether they realize it or not. I’ve been reading about how great Twitter is since 2006, but originally had no desire to use it. Here’s why…

  • The name doesn’t inspire confidence. Twitter. As in ‘Twitter your time away’. Like the rest of you guys, I’m pretty busy and am looking to save time, not find new ways to spend it.
  • The big ‘What are you doing now?’ question on the home page. I figured no one really cared what I just had for lunch or what TV show I am watching. And I was right.
  • The amount of data seemed overwhelming. Follow a bunch of your friends and family and be interrupted throughout the day every few minutes – not exactly a selling point!

As a result, I passed on Twitter back in 2006. And so did many of my domainer friends and associates.

But I was wrong. I started actively using Twitter this year and realized that it is being used for far more than what it was originally created for. Twitter has evolved into a very powerful micro-blogging platform. Since each post (called a tweet) is limited to 140 characters, most posts are either links to interesting sites or short questions and answers. By limiting my Twitter feed (list of subscriptions) to domainers, most of the posts were of interest to me and I was able to connect with a core group that I had a lot in common with.

I quickly built a following of over 250 users passionate about domaining – including many of my favorite domain bloggers. To start off, I ‘followed’ each of my favorite bloggers and read the profile of each of their followers. If their bio mentioned domaining (or looked interesting), I followed them too. This took some time, but was well worth it. Within minutes, people were checking out my profile and many were following me back. Pretty exciting, since I could now follow the daily updates of a great collective of domainers. And since many were following me back, they would see my updates as well.

I started receiving breaking domain news and exclusives before they appeared in the major blogs. Domainers commonly twitter about interesting news and domain events in real time – no more waiting for daily recaps. And since I could select the people I was following, I could tune out anyone posting spammy updates and just follow quality tweets. As an added benefit, many high profile domain bloggers tweet about things they don’t mention on their blogs and often offer bonuses to followers.

I started using Twitter to answer problems which Google couldn’t. Twitter is great for researching timely issues and reaching niche audiences. When one of my registrars suffered a major outage, a quick Twitter search showed tens of users confirming the problem – Google wasn’t aware of the problem yet. And if I had a domaining question, my group of Twitter domainer friends usually answered it within minutes.

I connected with a lot of great domainers that don’t maintain a regular blog presence. There are many professional domainers who don’t blog and don’t attend the major conferences. Many of these domainers have bought and sold hundreds of names and have a lot to contribute. As a result of my Twitter presence, I now have a number of valuable new contacts.

And there were a couple of other cool perks too…

  • Bypassing customer service hassles. I had a question for a major parking company and received a reply back from their VP within a minute of asking.
  • Domainers are a fun crowd. I’m enjoying getting to know a bunch of new ones and following their daily updates.
  • Tweeting about a mini site I was working on and having 20 people visit and comment on it within seconds.

Are there any downsides to Twitter?

Sure, just like blogging – following too many people can get overwhelming. And it requires some discipline (just like e-mail and Youtube) to use it as a business tool and not randomly surf all day. But used properly, it is a great tool and one which may become as important as email in years to come.

If you haven’t tried it yet, consider opening up an account and trying it for a week. And be sure to send me a ‘tweet’ and let me know what you think!

Great inaugural post and congrats on launching the blog…keep it simple, stay focused on what you enjoy and have fun!

robb 03.12.09 at 4:12 pm

Twitter is really catching on the last few weeks, I am enjoying it too. Got the names of a couple of major cities as usernames for Twitter and am posting news about each city – like a mini media site. Also have an account for the small town I live in to post news and get traffic to my local city website. Now just opened a personal Twitter account to post whenever something strikes me, and to follow people I’m interested in. Twitter is simple to use and forces people to keep their posts short and to the point, not like having to read a long email. I hear Twitter is still in start up mode, with around 30 employees – I wonder if Google or Microsoft will end up buying them out – will be interesting to see how they try to make money from the site, so far they haven’t but are just trying to get the eyeballs for now.

Peter 03.12.09 at 7:00 pm

Good post, I have had a similar experience, not getting it. The thing that made sense to me was when I followed a small number of people that I had been reading about – mostly Internet Marketing types – as long as the content is relevant to what you are interested in – its good.

Morgan Linton 03.12.09 at 8:11 pm

Great post – very relevant and some really good points. Glad to have you as part of the community and looking forward to your future posts!

Jeremy Armer 03.13.09 at 1:48 am

Great post, I’d like to add one thing.

I hear a lot about people getting overwhelmed by Twitter updates. Once you follow more than 200 people or so, it turns to mush.

First: Don’t try to read everything. That’s like trying to listen to 100 radio stations.
Second: Tweetdeck, tweetdeck, tweetdeck.

Get Tweetdeck and start creating groups, then turn off the “All Friends” feed (it eats up your API requests). I mostly want to hear from domainers but domaining is about *everything else*. If I only listened to domainers, I’d wouldn’t hear about a lot of the new trends…until after that perfect trending .com has been regged.

perchboy 03.13.09 at 5:46 am

Finally..a good explanation about why Twitter is so popular AND why I may want to re-consider the benefits of this phenomenon.

Good job!

perchboy

admin 03.13.09 at 6:26 am

Thanks for the warm welcome everyone!

Jeremy – couldn’t agree more about Tweetdeck and great point
about monitoring non-domaining tweets as well.

Domain Superstar 03.13.09 at 8:05 am

Great points and over all very nice post. Hope to be hearing some more from you in the future!

I started using Twitter few weeks ago… It’s “OK”

Not ready to abandon….yet.. Still experimenting with it.

So we’ll see how it goes. It does serve a purpose though:)

All the best,

Mike

Blake Worthington 03.14.09 at 4:12 am

Well you may have just convinced me to at least proceed with twitter. I have the same feelings you had in 2k6 but after reading this post it has changed my mind on things. Going to signup and see what is going on right after I post this comment.

Thanks again for sharing the information about twitter thought i was the only one hehe.

Will McCulloch 03.30.09 at 7:38 am

“What A Good Analysis” of Twitter , why many ( like me ) didn’t take it too seriously at the beginning – and why it’s now catching on …big time. Will be interesting to see how Twitter develops over the next weeks/months/years.

Best wishes & great site by the way

Will

jorge 02.16.10 at 12:05 am

I’ve been using Twitter long enough that it’s starting to drive me crazy. Too much “one-way” conversation.

It’d be good if you revisited this topic in 6 months (or a year) and see how you still feel about it.

Domain parking stats and revenue for some of my hand registered domains (part 1)

June 21, 2010

Just checked my parkings stats and thought I would share some of the visitor and earnings data on some recent hand registrations. Like everyone else, my parking numbers are way down, but with the right names it is still possible to cover reg fees and make some money while waiting to develop or sell names in a portfoilio.

The following stats are for the last 30 days.  For comparison purposes I have also included the Google keyword tool search data for each exact match phrase.

1. ExternalDVDWriters.com (Smartshops)

  • 65 Unique Visitors
  • 85% click-through rate
  • $13.07 revenue in last 30 days
  • keyword data: ‘external dvd writers‘ : 590 exact local monthly searches @ $.89 CPC

2. Free800Number.com (Smartname – standard parking)

  • 19 visitors
  • 32% click-through rate
  • $8.54 revenue in last 30 days
  • keyword data: ‘free 800 number’” exact 1600 local monthly searches @ $4.66 CPC

3. ModernSectional.com (Smartshops)

  • 57 Unique Visitors
  • 86% click-through rate
  • $6.78 revenue in last 30 days
  • keyword data: ‘modern sectional‘: 3600 exact local monthly searches @$1.14 CPC

The above three examples have similar metrics to the types of available names I typically post.   If you would like to receive advance notice of these types of available names, you can sign up for my free newsletter here.

I like Free800Number.com. Nice finds.

Thanks Tia!

James 06.21.10 at 3:25 pm

Is that revenue i.e your gross revenue from Smartshops or the revenue in terms of sales revenue from the items sold? If the former, those are some nice stats.

admin 06.21.10 at 3:57 pm

@James – The revenue posted is gross revenue.

Grant 06.22.10 at 8:33 am

Sorry, little confused about the “Gross Revenue”. This is before it is split with you and parking company correct? Is it a 50/50 split?

Fabio 07.29.10 at 12:39 am

If you don’t mind my asking, what is the main traffic source for these visitors you counted on your posts? Thanks for the attention!

admin 08.03.10 at 2:33 pm

@Grant – Sorry about the confusion. There is no split. e.g. in example #1, I made a profit of $13.07
.
@Fabio – mix of type-ins and Google/Yahoo traffic.

Recently hand registered domain earns $4.87 a click

November 17, 2010

I’m pretty lazy about checking my parking stats and am usually more concerned with developing and selling names.     Recently starting using a pretty cool iPhone app which lets me glance at daily and monthly revenue as well as well as my top performing names for the day.

Noticed that one of my hand registrations (Free800Number.com) just earned $4.87 a click on Smartname.    Logged in to my account and see that the name is doing pretty well (especially for a non-optimized straight parking page which I haven’t spent any time customizing).

Turns out this name received 70 unique visitors this month, has a 17% click-through rate and generated $22.93 this month.  Average Revenue per click for the month is $1.91, so I don’t know if the $4.87 click was a fluke or an upward trend (possibly due to Smartname changing to a Bing feed), but one can hope.

Of course most my hand registered names don’t do this well parking, but it is a nice surprise and should pay some renewal fees while I decide to develop or resell the name.

Feel free to post any of your own specific domain parking examples (good or bad) below.   If there is any interest I might make this a regular feature so we can all learn from each others experiences.

Your revenue will go down soon. It always does. None of these parking sites allow you to maintain that level of PPC… I say “allow” because dare we ask them questions about traffic source metrics, etc – they clam up. Its all a scam. There is zero regulation in the domain name word, the ppc world and especially in the online advertising world – so why would anyone want to have to be honest about the revenue we earn and why it suddenly falls off the face of the earth — whether with SmartName, Godaddy, Sedo – doesnt matter.

Mike is right, it’s nothing but scam. I had just pulled all my domains from Sedo. They keep selling all kinds of namees, I don’t know how they do it, but something stinks. The parking companies are all in some type of collusion to deprive the domain owner of their legitimate revenue. What they forget is that, were they to pay the money to the domain owner, this entire industry will prosper. Domains will be a legitimate investment grade commodity. As it stands, it doesn’t add up. I will soon start inviting the attorney General to investigate these outfits. I doubt any of them can withstand a little light.

Agree with Mike…once you start receiving high PPC on domains at places like SmartName and others they immediately shut off the spout and your revenue dries up. I’ve had many names generating high PPC at SmartName. When they shut off the ‘water’ I move them away. They have the nerve to ask why and when you ask them why…well, Mike said it all.

Nice click and nice hand registered name. There are still tons of great names out there it just takes time to find them!

Great name. There should be a good market for that one. Enjoy the PPC until you develop or flip it.

Thanks for the comments – I’ll try to do a follow up post on this name in a few months to compare revenue per click. Just to put it in perspective, I ran a report for 6 months ago and Smartname was paying an average RPC of $1.93 for this name, which is pretty close to the average $1.91 they are paying this month. I’m guessing the $4.87 per click yesterday was a fluke, although looking at the reports I see that I’ve been paid a RPC of between $3 and $4.87 on this name several times over the past six months.

I’ve also had some good earning names drop dramatically in the past – not so much with Smartnames (yet), but I keep meaning to run more comparative reports and test names with dropping revenue with different parking companies. I used to do this more, but with diminishing payouts, it’s not worth the time in many cases.

That said, I’m seeing a nice uptick with some of the names I still have at Parked.com.

Anyone else seeing higher earnings this month or want to share a record CPC they have received for a domain this month?

I’m not 100% sure how I found this blog or who the author is. But I’m grateful you put me on to two great buys at hand registration price! Someone bought a bunch of them before me, too. My top choice would have been HomeEquityApplication.com. But I’m pretty stoked about the two I snagged. — Danny Welsh
