Micropost – 3 Available mini site domains for hand registration

May 6, 2009

Wanted to post the following three exact match .com keyword domains suitable for minisite development, affiliate or SEO use.  All are available as of 2:15PM (EST) today.

I’ve checked demand and CPC for each domain using Google’s external keyword tool.   Since each domain is an exact match keyword domain whose keywords have Adwords advertisers, they can be easily monetized with Adsense/affiliate programs or resold to an end user.

1. GuitarWallMounts.com

$1.31 Cost per click (CPC) with 720 exact match Google searches last month.  Nice plural version – good for minisite development or end user resale.

Google shows over 5000 exact match results for ‘guitar wall mount’ and Google Shopping lists 40 guitar mounts for sale.

2. PoolRoomAccessories.com

$1.49 CPC with 170 exact match Google searches last month. Good for minisite development or end user resale.Google shows over 1500 exact match results for ‘pool room accessories’ with numerous Adwords advertisers.

3. SoftwareMarketingConsultant.com

$6.89 CPC.  Exact match.  High CPC good for a niche minisite.   This would be a also be great URL/email address for any software marketing consultant.

That’s it for today.   If you are interested in receiving future available minisite domains…

  • Subscribe here to receive advance e-mail notification of available names.
  • Follow me at @DomainTweeter.
  • Since many names I post receive simultaneous registrations, you may want to use a fast registrar and have your billing information pre-programmed. Or use a program like Roboform to fill in your information.

Update: I’m going to try mixing it up a little for the next week or two. Some days I may not post a domain, other days I’ll try to highlight a few different names and do a more detailed writeup of possible minisite concepts or end user sales possibilities.

I’m also going to start emailing some names exclusively to my mailing list subscribers and tweeting others just for my Twitter followers.

New Microsoft study confirms importance of domain names

December 18, 2011

domain-bias-study-snapshot

Wanted to pass along the following article from SearchEngineLand

A new study from Microsoft Research confirms what most SEOs have known for years—that domain names are a crucial element for capturing clicks and conversions from search results. Unlike what’s been published in most search marketing forums, however, this research was not focused on SEO techniques or search engine ranking algorithms, but rather on observed searcher behavior, offering insights about how people actually respond to what’s presented to them in search results.

Here’s the link to the Search Engine Land article….

As well as a link to the research paper…

Domain Bias in Web Search

Update 10:15AM: Just saw that Michael Berkens covered the study last week in his ‘Microsoft’s New Study Showing That Domain Names Are VERY Important‘ blog post.

Dog Boarding – Weekly Niche Report

September 22, 2010

This is the first post in a new series I am working on.  Each week I’ll highlight a different profitable online niche and give specific tips that domainers and business owners can use to increase traffic to their web sites and attract new customers.   This week’s niche is Dog Boarding.

What is Dog Boarding?

Dog boarding services watch your dog when you can’t. They are mostly utilized when pet owners go on vacation, but are also being billed as convenient places to socialize and groom pets when owners are short on time.

How popular / profitable is it?

Google’s keyword tool shows that that there are 135,00 local monthly searches for the phrase ‘dog boarding’. Since dog boarding is a very localized service, it especially lends itself to specific geo long tail names (e.g. DogBoardingLosAngeles, DogBoardingNYC, DogBoardingChicago, etc) – with advertisers currently paying $2 – $7 a click for these geo keyword searches).

Sample companies advertising dog boarding services

The following are a sampling of businesses which advertise in this niche.

dog boarding advertisers

Profiting from this niche / specific tips and advice

For business owners: If you own a dog boarding service, the first thing you will want to do is set up an Adwords account. This will let you advertise to customers specifically looking for your services on Google and their affiliates. The good news is that this can be done in less than an hour and if done right can be highly effective. The bad news – it can get expensive fast, especially if many of your competitors are bidding against you for top position.

For domainers / developers:  Significant opportunities exist to set up localized geographic directories for dog boarding services in specific cities.  One model would be to set up a complimentary listing service offering local boarding services a basic listing and offering featured listings for a set monthly fee.  Since dog boarding is a commonly used service, the potential exists to scale and duplicate this business model in different geographic regions.  This type of site can easily be hand coded, but would be made easier by using a directory plugin such as DirectoryPress.

Two tips to attract on ongoing stream of customers without spending hundreds of dollars advertising each month.

1. Receive free ‘type-in’ traffic from visitors searching for dog boarding services who directly ‘guess’ or type in the web site name instead of using a search engine.

For example, if 400 people a month are searching for ‘dog boarding chicago’, a percentage of these will type this term directly into their browser, effectively ‘guessing’ the the name of the site they are looking for.   By owning the corresponding domain (e.g. DogBoardingChicago.com) and forwarding it to your existing site, these ‘type-in’ visitors will immediately see your site.  If you receive 20 type-in visitors a month, you are receiving 240 ‘free’ visitors a year.  Since Google currently charges $6.42 CPC to advertise for this keyword, this could cost over $1000 if using Adwords alone.

Since these visitors are searching for the specific keywords you are targeting, they are typically of comparable quality to visitors received from paid advertising campaigns.  Best of all, after the initial purchase of the name, the ongoing renewal costs are about $10 a year and you control a valuable asset which your local competitors do not.

2. Improve your search engine ranking by owning the corresponding keyword domain.

If you are trying to rank #1 for ‘chicago dog boarding’, owning the exact match .com domain (ChicagoDogBoarding.com) can give your site a significant advantage.   In addition to the type-in traffic (discussed in #1), search engines give a significant boost to exact match keyword domains both in their free results and paid advertisements.

Ask just about any SEO expert, search engines like Google love exact match keyword domains – especially .com.  It is not unusual for these types of names to appear in first place for their matching search term.   Part of this is the domain itself, which is weighted into Google’s search algorithm (how Google decides which sites are ranked first).  Another advantage of exact match .com names is that they sound  more professional and are more likely to be remembered and to receive incoming links from related sites.   Since Google counts incoming links as ‘votes of confidence’, the combination of a keyword domain with a few quality incoming links is often enough to get even a basic web site with some unique content a top ranking.

These are a few of the reasons that highly searched keyword domains typically sell in excess of $100,000 on the domain aftermarket.   Luckily, very specific keyword names (also called long tail domains) can usually  be purchased for a fraction of this price.

Summary

Dog boarding is a heavily searched term which lends itself to specific geographic targeting. Purchasing domains with the specific keywords customers are searching for can be an effective way to cost effectively increase traffic to a dog boarding site, both via ‘free’ type-in traffic and enhanced natural search engine rankings.

Good article and while the theory of this article is true your example of dog boarding is one of those bad examples of Google keyword data.

Under the old Google Keyword Tool you are correct that the exact keyword phrase “dog boarding” shows to get 110,000 exact searches a month however most likely this is VERY wrong.

Under the new Google Adwords keyword results this same exact match term only gets 5,400 global monthly searches and 3,600 local – over 90% less.

Additionally, when you look at the compete.com results for the #1 search result for this terms – which happens to be dogboarding.com – out of the 5 top keywords that bring traffic to this domain, the exact match dog boarding is not one of them.

http://siteanalytics.compete.com/dogboarding.com/

Same with the # 2 result – CampBowWowUsa.com

http://siteanalytics.compete.com/campbowwowusa.com/

A lot of determining how powerful a generic term like this is has to do with analyzing the SERP results, comparing old and new keyword data. If you rely solely on keyword data from one dataset without looking at the SERP results and keyword traffic to those SERP results from sources source as compete, seomoz etc then a lot of money can be spent on nothing.

I wrote an article on this last week .. feel to delete the link below if you dont feel its relevant

Nice, looking forward to more in this series.

admin 09.23.10 at 8:26 am

@Alan – Thanks for the comments and the link to your article. All data for this post was taken using the ‘new’ Google keyword tool, not the old one. The 135,000 local monthly searches is for the (non-exact match) phrase ‘dog boarding’, which can occur in any number of different searches (mostly geo).

Good point about looking at other sources of data such as Compete – looks like the top 5 keyword sources were all geo related – which doesn’t surprise me given the nature of the service.

@Mike – Thanks. BTW I’ve been enjoying your Using Domains Properly series.

All 6 domains registered in less than 5 minutes.

Erik Zubkov 06.02.09 at 9:31 am

bottom line-

you are helping seriously line the pockets of 3 or 4 people everyday – the only problem is its the same 3 or 4 people.

if i didnt have a job and i just sat and waited for email to go “ding” while i sat there with my namecheap, dynadot, godaddy accounts, etc open i could just do a quick copy and paste and get half of your domain tweets to become my domains within 10 seconds of getting the tweet.

this leaves every single other person who would like to benefit from this a second passive income out in the cold. while you are doing a great unselfish thing by not taking these domains for yourself, lets not kid each other. the other day i just so happened to be sitting there typing an email when your tweet came in. i immediately went to register it and it was available through godaddy but because i was using a newly created account i had to actually type in the cc info… just the numbers and exp date – thats it and then i checked out. i was notified that i got the domain… 2 days kater GD told me i didnt get the domain and they were sorry – bottom line is that i was on it in under a minute flat and still didnt get the domain. so there should be one or 2 people who have you on their xmas list thats for sure because you are putting 1000’s of dollars in their pockets this year.

solution: why dont you stagger the email or tweet so it gets dispersed randomly to different batches every 10 minutes or so so these greedy little piggies can jump on their domain only to find out that it was already purchased a half hour earlier. and of course they will still get a few as the randomization works itself out but this way we all have a shot instead of guaranteeing that none of us even have a shot. i have made up my mind that i wont bother with your tweets because there is no way that those domains will be available by the time i try to get them or even one of them.

so please fix this. it isnt fair. it defeats your whole purpose. what about older folks who just dont move as fast – they wouldnt have a chance even if they were on godaddy before anyone else – now thats just plain assinine.

disturbed,

erik z.

admin 06.02.09 at 10:35 am

Hi Erik. Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts. I know how frustrating it can be to just miss a good domain – it happens to me more often than I would like to admit :(

I originally started tweeting the names to see what kind of demand there was for good keyword names. True, most names are registered during the first few minutes and I have some regulars, but more than 30 different people have been able to grab the names I post. Domainers are a competitive crowd and part of the fun for many is the competition involved.

On my site, I state that most names are registered within minutes and at the bottom of each blog post, I recommend the following techniques to increase the chances of getting a name.

1. My e-mail subscribers typically get a minute or two head start before I tweet most names.

2. I recommend using a fast registrar (I like Moniker.com) and having billing information pre-programmed or using a program like Roboform to speed things up.

I appreciate your suggestions, unfortunately staggering tweets wouldn’t be possible without multiple Twitter accounts and staggering e-mails isn’t something I can do with my current set up.

I do try to vary the times I post and will try to do some extra after hours posts for those for don’t have access at work. I also plan to announce some bonus names only for my e-mail subscribers and some names just for my Twitter followers.

Appreciate your comments and hope you decide to give it another chance if you see a domain you like.

Tia Wood 06.02.09 at 11:37 am

Erik, I understand your frustration but use the opportunity to figure out how to become more competitive. It’s not fair to ask domaintweeter to tweak their business plans to fit your availability. In business, especially the domain industry, you have to adapt and transform in order to compete…..or get left behind.

Ozie Jackson 06.02.09 at 5:42 pm

Erik, also remember there is more than one way to skin a cat. I also have missed registering a lot of the posted domain names, but seeing some of the names here gave me ideas about other possibilities that may be unregistered. I have been able to hand register some quality key word domains just from ideas generated from Domaintweeter’s posts. Like Tia said adapt and transform.

Bidding tip and last minute no reserve picks for today’s Snapnames showcase auction

September 10, 2009

Today’s Snapnames Job/Career Showcase Auction ends at 3:15PM EST.    Wanted to share a bidding tip (based on my experience submitting a domain) and highlight a few no reserve / low reserve names I like.

Bidding Tip

I could be wrong, but I would bet that the majority of domains in the $201 – $500 reserve range have a fixed reserve price of $300.   Why?  Because the submission form for this auction stated that domains listed as no reserve will have a minimum bid of $300.     Since I was interested in listing my name as no reserve I entered $300 (instead of 0).  When the auction list was published last week, I noticed that my domain  was listed in the $201 – $500 range instead of  ‘no reserve’.

Did a little testing this morning, and apparently domains listed as no reserve have a minimum bid of $300, however domains listed in the $201 – $500 range will accept a $201 bid even it does not meet a minimum reserve of $300.   Don’t know how helpful this information will be, but wanted to pass it along in case you will be bidding in the last few seconds of the auction, when time really counts.

My no reserve / low reserve picks

Just finished reviewing the no reserve / low reserve domains listed in today’s auction looking for ones which lend themselves to mini site development and end user resale.   I ran them through Google’s keyword tool to estimate search demand and cost per click and did some basic research to determine potential end users.

Here are my picks…

1. DiscountLoans.com ($10.29 CPC / 390 monthly searches) [$1051 high bid]

This one has good potential for minisite use, lead generation or end user resale.  Would also be good domain for use with one of the many loan /cash advance affiliate programs.

2. FreeLoanQuote.com ($11.12 CPC / 480 exact / 720 phrase) [$300 high bid]

Not as short or catchy as  #1, but has slightly more search demand more Adwords advertisers.  Nice name for lead generation or end user resale.

3. GelSocks.com ($1.18 / 720 monthly searches)  [$300 high bid]

Nice plural category name.   Might be interesting to set up a minisite to get ranked, then find out who makes gel socks and explain the advantages of owning their category.]

4. HumanResourcesPrograms.com ($7.05 CPC / 480 monthly searches) [0 current bids]

Nice plural category name in high CPC niche.  Google shows 94,100 exact match results for this term. Good name for mini site, directory or end user resale.  I’d probably develop it as a minisite/directory listing schools offering human resources programs and monetize with a combination of Adsense and direct advertising/featured listings.  With a little work could be a nice end user sale.    I’d start by contacting some of the 24 Adwords advertisers bidding on this exact keyword phrase.   [Disclaimer: This is one of my domains.]

5. LawDegreeOnline.com ($20.06 CPC / 2,900 monthly searches) [$400]

I like this one for the same reasons as #4.   Degree program traffic can be very valuable since a new student can be worth thousands to a school.   High CPC makes these types of minisites good candidates for Adsense monetization.

6. LegalAssistantTraining.com ($8.00 CPC / 590 monthly searches) [0 current bids]

Nice CPC and 25 Google Adwords advertisers.  Good name for mini site or end user resale.

7. LitigationSpecialist.com ($4.09 CPC / 170 monthly searches) [0 current bids]

Google shows 46,500 results for this exact phrase.  Here are some examples of litigation specialist jobs.  Not a lot of Adwords advertisers for this one, so end user might be the way to go on this one – would be a pretty cool URL to have on a business card :)

Good luck bidding and feel free to leave a comment below with your picks (and why you like them)…

Selling your domains by putting them directly in the path of end users (Part I)

November 9, 2011

If you’re looking to maximize the sales price of your domains and own names which are likely to be attractive to end-users (e.g. generic exact match .com/.net domains), you might want to consider these two strategies…

First, it’s helpful to stop thinking like a domainer and start thinking like an average end-user.  Most end-users aren’t familiar with whois and check to see if a domain is available by one of two ways:

1. They simply type the domain name into their browser…

If they see the name is owned by a company in their business, they likely stop right there.

If they see an error message or a un-configured hosting page, they likely stop right there.

If they see a parked page, and there’s no prominent and obvious indication that the domain is for sale, they likely stop right there.

Why not make it easy for them?

If your names aren’t developed and you’re not making a lot of money from parking, consider creating a simple ‘domain for sale page’ and pointing your domains to it.   At the bare minimum, the page should clearly indicate that the name is for sale and tell visitors how they can go about purchasing it. Even better, assume that the end-user probably hasn’t bought an aftermarket domain before and…

Talk about the importance of having a good domain and explain the advantages (e.g. professionalism, memorability, SEO, better response rates from off-line advertising, etc.).

Reassure the end-user that these types of transactions are easy and safe to complete.

Include your contact information, or an unintimidating form that the end-user can use to get in contact with you.

How to do it

You don’t have to be a web developer or have any major web design skills.

One way is to set up a simple page using WordPress. If you already have a web hosting account with a popular hosting company like Dreamhost or Hostgator, you probably already have the ability to create an unlimited amount of sites for free and to install WordPress with one click.

Once WordPress is installed, you can select from the many free themes that most hosting companies include and configure a simple page in about an hour or so.

Or if you don’t have a hosting account or aren’t familiar with WordPress, you might want to use a service like Wufoo which makes it pretty easy and has a free plan for simple pages.

Summary

Either way, once you have your page on-line, end users who type in your name will have no doubt that it’s for sale, may start to warm up to the idea of purchasing it (vs. hand registering an inferior available domain) and will have a clear cut way of contacting you and initiating a dialog.

In the second part of this post, I’ll discuss the other primary way end users check availability and a very easy way to get your names directly in front of them along with some specific pricing tips and strategic advice.

Thanks for this post. I agree that putting up a ‘for sale’ page can be helpful.

I stopped using ‘for sale’ landing pages a while back after realizing that potential buyers could be turned-off to the name(s) because they realize that their competitors (who also, likely stumbled on the same page) saw the same offering.

You may ask, “OK, so what does that mean?” Well, it’s simply human nature to not want to either feel as though (a) you’re buying something that others – perhaps, many others – have passed on, and (b) the asset you’re considering purchasing is in some way, tainted — which is the same problem that exists (at least, from the perspective of an end-user) with domain names that have been used unsuccessfully, then resold.

Granted, that there probably aren’t many alternatives to going the ‘for sale’ route (absent an auction or development).

10 More Exact Match Domains available for Handregistration

November 29, 2012

Since there was good interest in yesterday’s list of domains,  thought I would put out an early list  this morning. Just like yesterday,  mostly .com domains although I did mix in one net and one .org.  All the names are available for hand registration as of 7 AM this morning…

Coolhumidifiers.com
WirelessChime.com
HomeOfficeComputerDesk.com
Freestandinggascookers.com
FlatpanelTVwallmounts.com
keyboardwithmouse.com
FreeSearchEngineTools.com
2Dbarcodereader.com
LEDgardenlights.org
BubbleEnvelopes.net

Update: Thanks to those who contacted me to let me know the metrics I originally posted as ‘monthly searches’ were not exact searches as I normally post.   I’ve removed them to avoid any confusion and will make sure I have my morning coffee and double-check everything before posting future early morning lists!

If you would like to receive free available domain lists before I post them on-line, sign up here for my free domain update newsletter.

How to receive advance notice of the available domain of the day

I typically post the available domain of the day betweeen 11AM – 11PM EST.     I e-mail it first to my mailing list subscribers, then post a tweet 1-2 minutes later.    I try to include a link showing possible uses like a Google search showing advertisers or a list of relevant products.

Since the names are unregistered, people can use their favorite registrar.    Usually several people all try at once and the winner tweets in to claim victory.  If you are interested, here are a few tips to help improve your chances…

  • Subscribe here to receive advance e-mail notification of each day’s name.
  • Follow me at @DomainTweeter.  I usually post a notice before sending the e-mail and then tweet the name two minutes later.
  • Since most names receive many simultaneous registrations, you may want to use a fast registrar and have your billing information pre-programmed.  Or use a program like Roboform to fill in your information.

Domaining exp. #3: Using Twitter to promote Sedo auction

March 30, 2009

I’m selling I’ve sold HELOCLoans.net as part of an experiment testing the effectiveness of using Twitter to promote a Sedo domain auction.

1. To help get this auction started, I’ll paypal 10% of the final sales price to the person who makes the first bid. Update: Contest winner: @FreelanceNation

2. I’ll also pick a random commenter who tweets about this auction and paypal them 5% of the final sales price. Update: Contest winner: @MylesAgnew

HELOCLoans.net: Auction ends Friday Apr/03/09 – 6:51PM EST

Overview: HELOC Loans (short for Home Equity Line of Credit Loans) are one of the most heavily searched financial terms on the Internet. Google’s sktool shows an estimated 1000 monthly searches with an average cost per click (CPC) of $7.27.

Due to it’s high demand and CPC, this domain is ideal for a mini site or end user resale to a bank. Google shows 249,000 results for ‘heloc loans’ and all of the top 5 domain extensions have been reserved for this competitive keyword.

Details and recommendations for submitting to Domaining.com’s 1/9/12 high exposure newsletter.

December 29, 2011

Update: Due to high volume, newsletter will now be sent out on Monday, January 9th, 2012.

Domaining.com is accepting names for a special newsletter scheduled to go out on Monday January 9th, 2012. The newsletter will also be sent to DNForum and DomainState members, so it looks like a good way to get your name in front of a lot of fellow domainers.

Here are the details as well as a few recommendations…

  • They are accepting one domain per person and selecting a total of 100 names – all extensions welcome, but .COM recommended. It should go without saying (for the first three), but the submission page states ‘no typos, hacks, cyberquatting, or adult’.
  • Sales commission is 10% with 2 week exclusivity after the newsletter is delivered.
  • Domain sales handled by escrow (included in commission) via Domaining.com’s ECOP escrow service.

Recommendations…

  • Since the submission page mentions ‘priced for domainers’, this is probably not the place to look for end user pricing.
  • The submission process uses Valuate.com’s (owned by Domaining.com) automated appraisal process, so if you are trying to decide between a few different domains to submit, might be a good idea to run them all through Valuate.com since this may be used as a significant factor in domain selection.
  • As with any automated service, its algorithm may favor certain types of names (e.g. high CPC / search demand, etc.), so you might want to factor this into your selection decision.  For example, I haven’t decided on which name to submit yet, but am considering one which has a $7,100 valuation due to a $12+ CPC.
  • The submission page also has an optional short slogan or note – always a good idea to fill out to bring additional attention to the name and to list anything that makes it special.

Here’s the link for the submission form:

Best of luck on an early domain sale in 2012!
